in a real world, every parent would want their kids to make all the right choices, to never cross over into areas of gray, or to breach moral boundaries. i am sure todd and sarah palin feel the same about their kids.
unmarried teen parent bristol palin spoke to greta on fox last night. and frankly i think for an 18 year old kid, she did great. however some very vocal conservatives are huffing and puffing over the fact that she did not say she fully support abstinence-only.
the money line that seems to be in question is this:

has not this family - and this young private citizen - been vilified enough? must we do this to an 18 year old girl who’s life will forever be different because of her decision to have sex 12 months ago? would we have rather her secretly abort her wee son just so we have ‘purity’ on our side?
i think what Bristol is saying to greta is that teenagers are having premarital sex more often that it is more acceptable among her peers. she isn’t slamming abstinence or promoting premarital sex.
i also think debbie schlussel misses the point about conservative family values don’t you? it’s a family value to take care of your child even when they make mistakes; to support them when they need it most; to ensure that the life they created is loved and cared for not through government supports but through the family support system. as far as marriage…just having a ceremony for the sake of a baby doesn’t ensure a successful marriage for bristol and her boyfriend. isn’t ’successful marriage’ a family value? we should all want a happy ending for these kids.
and the crack about sarah palin and conservative of the year, sounds like someone might be jealous? i dunno. let’s not eat our own - or their kids. dang.

I dont think any political persuasion dictates that you stay with the kids father out of some pre ordained rigors and regardless of your political persuasion, we all got the fire down below baby. Specially when you’re that age.
She has taken responsibility for her actions, not tossed the baby in a dumpster and done nothing but depend on the greatest institution in our country.
And yes, when “our own” misrepresent us they should be gobbled up but not before being told that if the conservative party is to lose the sterotypical image of barefoot and preggers in the kitchen she could do well to shut her yap

I think that comment was totally inappropriate. I agree I think she was talking more about the cultural view of abstinence. The thing talking about abstinence with Bristol is pointless - time to move on. She obviously needs to abstain until married, but she also needs to focus on moving on as a mother. Regarding her getting married - why push them into marriage until they are both ready? Why compound this mistake. Getting married right away won’t take the mistake away.
I blogged on this, and picked up on the comment but did not use it as an opportunity to criticize Bristol, but rather the prevailing attitude. I believe that as she gets older and has more experience she will be a more articulate in her position.

Also what about the fact that there was this big announcement that Bristol would be marrying the father. Well? Sarah Palin has 5 children. One of them made a really bad decision, young people often do. I don’t see how this destroys her credibility as a conservative. Please tell me what the correct “conservative” thing would have been for Governor Palin to do. Kick her out so she’s sure to end up on welfare, just so that she doesn’t embarrass her political career? Is that what a truly caring and “abstinence only” teaching parent should have done? You can speculate about whether her being the Governor and not a stay at home mom had something to do with Bristol getting pregnant, but the fact is she did, and now there is a baby. I doubt Gov. Palin will allow her to live with her forever. She’s helping her now so that she can get her education, take care of her baby the right way, and move out. End of story.

Those of you sitting in judgment on Bristol Palin and her family: I supposed when held up to the light of scrutiny, the actions of you and your families will be perfect, without blemish. No mistakes there, no poor decisions.
Liberals don’t believe in accountability or taking responsibility for their own actions. Thru their Chosen One the have elected a president who is a shade of socialism that I don’t think anyone is prepared for.
Sarah Palin never put herself out there as the standard-bearer for conservative values. It is the liberals who gave her that title in their zeal to see her excoriated for her own choices. Agree with them or not.
Sarah Palin is a woman who holds a powerful job while having a husband and children - all of whom see pretty happy and well-adjusted.

Excellent remarks on your part. I agree wholeheartedly. Bristol Palin was saying she made a mistake in having sex too early and that she believes abstinence is best. Her comment that it abstinence isn’t realistic is true in the sense that if we promote only abstinence, it isn’t going to stop teen pregnancy. EVERYONE KNOWS THIS. No one in the abstinence movement (myself included) is stupid enough to claim that “abstinence only” education will stop teen pregnancy. Her comments are being brutally mangled by people on both sides of this issue and people are putting words in her mouth that she simply didn’t say.
God bless them all. The message from the Palin family is simple. “Love them both”, meaning both mother and child. Bristol is going on to college AND she is taking care of that baby. Many young women of college age who are faced with an unplanned pregnancy are pressured to have an abortion or give up their education. Visit Feminists for Life for information on how to change this sub-culture in America that is so brutal for so many.
