The One can find $1.2 trillion dollars to pay off unions, environmentalists, ACORN, and other political friends. and he thinks we should all pay for health care for children of people making over $80,000 a year. but paying for the expenses of injuries our soldiers received in the line of duty and in service to this country is just asking too much? these are earned - through blood and treasure - benefits!
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki confirmed Tuesday that the Obama administration is considering a controversial plan to make veterans pay for treatment of service-related injuries with private insurance. [read more]
i’m inclined to believe this is just one more lame-brained political stunt to gin up support for the obama nationalized health care plan, because surely no one could be this stupid? i mean he went to harvard for gosh sakes! heh.
to try to save a few bucks on the backs of wounded vets is just deplorable especially when we see the prk they will fund. the democrats can’t afford to provide health care they promised to veterans but they want to give health care to everyone? double speak. they are trying to make national health care work anyway possible even at the expense of wounded vets which makes me nuts.
democrats are the first to dismantle our military and defense services in this country. it takes a republican in office to try to rebuild the devastation they cause. and who is it that cries foul about massive defense spending? you got it, democrats.

Rehbein, who is the head of our country’s largest veterans organization - the american legion - says he is ‘deeply disappointed and concerned’ after a meeting with obama yesterday to discuss the above numnut idea to force private insurance companies to pay for the treatment of military veterans who have suffered service-connected disabilities and injuries.
“It became apparent during our discussion today that the President intends to move forward with this unreasonable plan,” said Commander David K. Rehbein of The American Legion. “He says he is looking to generate $540-million by this method, but refused to hear arguments about the moral and government-avowed obligations that would be compromised by it.”
The Commander, clearly angered as he emerged from the session said, “This reimbursement plan would be inconsistent with the mandate ‘ to care for him who shall have borne the battle’ given that the United States government sent members of the armed forces into harm’s way, and not private insurance companies. I say again that The American Legion does not and will not support any plan that seeks to bill a veteran for treatment of a service connected disability at the very agency that was created to treat the unique need of America’s veterans!”

You are kidding right? The amount of money spent on bombs and bullets in this country is obscene especially with the numbers of hungry children and seniors without healthcare. How many bombs does it take to kill someone? Just curious. How many bullets does it take to kill someone? Just curious.
You are the ones who harp on the fact that we have a volunteer military. They know the risks and they takes those responsibilities seriously correct? Then when they get wounded why is it our responsibility if they have personal insurance? If they don”t then our national health care can help.
This country has got to stop warmongering right and left. And it will be President Obama who will ensure that. His attempts at stablizing the country you mock but in 4 years you will all thank us. And by the way, it took a republican to destroy our relationships across the world. It took a republican to destroy our economy. Yes, PenniePan we do have a volunteer military. So because of that you stick them with the bill when they get wounded serving their country? When our guys and gals come home wounded they should not be subjected to “B” rated health care provided by the fed or pay anything at all thru private insurance.
We as taxpayers should have no problem coughing up what it takes to keep our vets healthy for the rest of their lives as they so heroically volunteered to fight for our lives to be sustained.

They weren’t forced. I personally am not pro military. I wish ours was less aggressive. I think there is much more power in teaching people to fish then blowing them up. I appreciate the need for security in this country so I do not begrudge benefits for risks. However to give them all they get is not realistic in this society. They are not better then that malnourished child in the corner who doesn’t eat. You people don’t get that do you? You are so into rushing to war and taking over by force. Like what Kevin, I have a 22 year old here missing his left ear, the left side of his face, is blind in his left eye, and has blurred vison in his right. He was injured by an IED explosion while on partol searching for 2 kidnapped soldiers. His squad leader was killed. So what does he deserve? Doesn’t he deserve the best care he can get regardless? You tell me what society owes him. Better yet I wish you would tell him, because if he had his way he would be right back over there (voluntarily) fighting for the very freedom that gives you the opportunity to spew on this blog.

Our costs in Iraq are much the same are represented in what is now a booming commercial structure on its way up. Afghanistan may not be able to take such a course since your brain fart leader wants to give concessions to the Taliban allowing them to have a controlling seat in that countries parlaiment.
Also, if you believe that teaching people to fish is such a great idea you should apply that philosophy to the millions of bums like you who seem to think that the country and its top earners seem to owe you health care, tutition, a mortgage and foodstamps.

I feel sorry and all for people who come back from Iraq messed up but I think they chose to go do that and thats not my problem. What I dont get is how come you guys say people should take care of themselves but you want us to take care of military guys when they went in on their own? Voluntary you know? I like soldiers and all. I just don’t think everything should be given to them like Asia said or somebody up there. They get lots of sh*t in benefits education, housing and stuff.

I’m a disabled Veteran. Served in Africa 1964-68. I did not ask the Army to “give” me medical treatment. The Army promised me they would take care of my needs for my service. Yes I was a volunteer and I would volunteer again today if I could. I would like to thank those who are supporting me. For those who aren’t, that is your right. A lot of soldiers fought to protect your right, many of them died. No thanks necessary, we volunteered.

Yes, I volunteered. I joined the United States Marine Corps to fight a war. I served at the tip of the spear in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. I served again, in 2005, one month after my son was born, I went to Fallujah. I asked for nothing. I got paid. I did it because motherfuckers like Pennie, Kevin, and countless other assholes want to enjoy all of our liberties just because they are born in this country. Get the fuck out of MY COUNTRY, you fucking noncontributing fucks. If you can’t serve in the military, the least you can do is shut the fuck up. You know nothing of the cost of freedom. You don’t pay your dues, you never fucking will. You are protected, shut up. Yes, we volunteer, because we don’t trust that others will. I informed him of the ignorance being spewed here and hes apologized to me wishing I’d convey that sentiment to Kate if he came off too vulgar, he had no idea how offensive some of the comments were as I only gave him the link to check this out.
This proposal will never see the light of day, I wouldnt worry about it at all.
What concerned me was these idiots at this blog in support of it were using some of the most insulting justifications I’ve ever heard coming from the party that says they care so much about about the troops.
Many of them did not read the article in its completion and went with the assumptive impression that our troops were going to be asked to pay “all” of their injury expenses…

There is a time when EVERYONE needs to give up something. I think service personnel are important for security and peacekeeping however it is a voluntary military. If they have insurance why can’t they pay for their care? I don’t think military personnel need to be put on pedastals as some in the room do. Military personnel do get many perks for their service. I know people don’t want to think that way but it is true. Serving the country through the military is noble but so is working for the Salvation Army or the Peace Corp or even a Day Care for low income families.

I read this entire blog & couldn’t possibly respond to it all…one thing that rings so true is why they all the support workmens comp & other similars but not their Veterans health care?
Seems to me the whining done here is simply jealousy, I’d be willing to bet those for this proposal have not served or been injured so feel its a waste due to it not lining their pockets. Fact is American soldiers provide ALL its citizens & others (another topic) living in America the freedoms they desire, without them this country would experience 9/11 every other month. Supporting your troops includes post military too! Politicians receive their same pay and benefits for their entire lives following their ” service” regardless of their term lengths. Why isn’t there a proposal to stop that wasteful spending and make them pay for their health care? We all change jobs in our lifetimes but don’t expect our previous employers to pay us at the same pay grade plus benefits for our entire lives. Service members who receive a rating below a certain percentage of disability DOES pay copay’s and such for their SERVICE connected disabilities. People are terribly lost in their worlds of blackberry s & ipods. Glen Beck is right… like people will form. We have to, to make sense of the crooked Illinois politics that now rule our GOD forsaken government. No responses necessary, just know that I am another veteran whose family is paying in more ways than monetary for my decision to serve the people of the united states.

If they are voluntary this is all the more reason to offer them medical at no deduction or additional cost to them.

The weak argument that the force is all volunteer, and that’s why the should have to pay for health care is thrown around a lot. I wonder if the ones who use this would then agree that there is no need for national health care because anyone who doesn’t have it is either too lazy, unqualified, uneducated or doesn’t care to find an employer who offers health care. I mean, after all, it’s their choice to be in the situation they are in, correct? This person would also agree that no illegal immigrant should receive an emergency treatment or first aid from the Border Patrol Agent who finds them dehydrated in the desert. So, if it’s fine for wounded veterans to have to pay for continued health care (which is beyond obscene) then everyone should pay, and there should be no government assistance. This argument could also extend to all social programs that do not benefit society as a whole, but rather cater to a continued laziness by individuals who have no incentive to go beyond a government hand out. To end your argument with “I hate Republicans” says to all reading that you are ignorant. Nothing takes your argument back to the school yard quicker than using a personal attack. Weak. Wounded veterans deserve health care for life, and that really is the LEAST we can do as Americans.

I think black bird 1 is a genius. too bad i won’t follow his genius advice. instead, because people agree with me that everyone should have to pay their own way, but they also agree with me that we should nationalize and spread the wealth, i am going to abolish workers compensation. Employees will now have to pay for their own medical bills relating to on the job injuries, those workers volunteered to take those jobs and new the risks. No more funding to mexico, canada, tsunami victims, or even hurricane katrina victims. people in those areas know the risks of living there and chose to. they could have lived in south dakota. In fact, while i’m at it, i’m going to do away with any federal funding for cancer research and medical bills because smokers chose to smoke and it’s their fault they got cancer. the surgeon general said, they should have listened. To handle the extremely high level of deaths and illnesses, i will create a new high nutrient content wafer called soilent green, which will soak up all federal funding.

My name is Master Sergeant Jesse Duran. I have been proudly serving this fine country for over twenty years. I realize that our nation is at a crossroads, I do believe its time that we begin to take better care of this fine nation, and I pray my Commander in Chief can be that figure who takes America out of these troubling times. But I have to take issue with your thoughtless comments about Soldiers losing medical benifits for service related injuries. You are right on one point, when I joined I was aware of the inherent risk of being a Soldier. I knew there might have been a time when I was called upon to by my country to serve in war. I have served in war, lost friends, and seen Soldiers maimed for life. Despite these facts I never imagined that my fellow countrymen, you Penni, would think Soldiers in some way, get what they deserve and therefore should be resonsible for paying their own medical bills. Penni, have you ever served your country? Do you have any clue what it means to put your life on the line??? I imagine not. Soldiers do what they do for many reasons. Not sure if your aware but the average Soldier on the ground makes less money than most professions. Most of us do it because we love to serve and are glad to protect our nation. The issue I have with this initiative is that Soldiers are ordered by our Commander in Chief to enter harms way. If we get hurt, we should be taken care. In the Army we have what’s called the Soldiers creed. One line states that “I will never leave a fallen comrade”. We always take care of our own and I pray Our President does the same. Bottom line, I have no problem with President Obama, I voted for him. I don’t even have a problem with you Penni. Our country allows you to say whatever you want. I protect that right. Remeber this though, without Soldiers projecting America’s stregnth, we wouldn’t be having this conversation now!!!!!!!

I moved to sweden because the US treats average citizens like crap, and gives military personnel, who VOLUNTEERED to be in the military FREE food, free health care, free recreation rooms, tax-FREE shopping, FREE dental care, FREE eye care/glasses, etc. ETC ETC ETC. here in Sweden, it is free health care for everyone, and guess what??? IT IS GREAT!! so many repubs. and others yap about how horrible socialized medicine would be if instituted in the US. It is wonderful in sweden at least, I can say. nobody is left out. In the US, the rich can afford their bills, the military gets almost all of it for free, and the poor or middle income pay outrageous bills they can ill-afford in the US. Thank God the US voted obama in and got rid of the worst president ever..GW BUSH!

one more thing, NOT ONLY do us military soldiers provide a safe, productive, great country to live in for others, but ALL working and productive US citizens do that…teachers, nurses, computer operators, cashiers, EVERYONE who works provides a good country to others, not just military personnel. If you had military personnel, and removed all other workers in the US, then the US would cease to exist, so quit whinning and saying that only the military personnel keeps the US safe, happy and productive. It is everyone. In fact, many concurr that the US military and their policies have actually endangered US citizens lately by making us more of a target for terrorists, etc. bc of Guantanamo bay, their actions in iraq, etc. as Harry Truman once said, Beware of the US military industrial complex!!

I have to comment because it is bull that Obama would take away already lacking benefits from veterans.
I am unhappy to hear that.
I am gonna give you my back ground bc it is relevant. I am a former army soldier and My husband is now out to sea with the navy. neither of us is wounded, but a lot of soldiers volunteer out of need. I was not born in this country but I believe that the ones that made it possible for me to come here and live my life relatively safely and without fear deserve everything they get and more. what they get now, is full health care… that you have to wait on. I am two month’s pregnant and am yet to recieve my first prenatal care because I have to wait…. my husband is in need of surgery… he found out in May… and he has to wait until september. The medical care is not that great. but they deserve to get it without cost because they cared for you.
I think Universal Health Care is a great Idea… It works in my country and it works in britain… and it works for the military, so you say because that is all the military medical model is. Except you have no problem paying it because we work for it. But let me tell you something… we pay for the homeless and children of broke people anyway with our taxes… because the state foots the bill… Obama is just looking for a more efficient way to do it… not succeeding his plan is confusing, but we need to find one quick.
Let me see what else the military gets… Dental… hardly adequate.. and incomplete… we also get an amount for housing… that usually is just at where the market is where you are stationed, and the neighborhoods are hardly that great in which you can afford housing. I live on military housing that is not worth the ammount of money they give in the BAH on regular market… yet they take the whole of the money anyway… and I have to use state resources to help feed my family… and you’d think military personel wouldn’t qualify… au contraire.
So you see we are just as poor as the poor little kid down the street don’t take away what the military has as a job perk for getting shot at by your sorry behind… but I also have to say that I have hope that at least the president we have succeeds. I don’t care who he is… I wasn’t one to Bash George bush even when I didn’t agree with him… I thought he was a great guy. and I am inclined to think the same of the new person. I don’t have the energay or inclination to hate everything this dude does… because he has good intentions just like George W. did.

I have served the United States of America for 25 years as a Soldier (3 years in Viet Nam) and 16 years as a civil servant (US Army) . After reading the other responses, it becomes very clear our current leaders and the vast majority of the American public have limited insight into any military service. I cannot think of any form of disrespect greater then to tell service members that they would incur all medical expense form service connected injuries’.
Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder! We’ve got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we’ve got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can’t even clean up after a hurricane. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, ‘Stay the course.’
The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we’re fiddling in Iraq , the Middle East is burning and nobody seems to know what to do. And the press is waving ‘pom-poms’ instead of asking hard questions. That’s not the promise of the ‘ America ‘ my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for.
I’ll go a step further. You can’t call yourself a patriot if you’re not outraged.
Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It’s easy to sit there with your feet up on the desk and talk theory. Or send someone else’s kids off to war when you’ve never seen a battlefield yourself. It’s another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down.
We will reap what we sow…………..!!
