sarah palin vs barack obama on those pesky death panels

Date August 13, 2009

it’s not going away. first, sarah palin spoke out on obamacare calling the end-of-life counseling sessions ‘death panels.’ barack obama, at one of his ginned up town hall meetings (filled with ‘plants‘ i might add), responded to the ‘death panels’ suggestion by saying this:

“Let’s disagree over things that are real, not these wild misrepresentations,” he said, laughing off rumors that the government would set up “death panels that will basically pull the plug on Grandma.”

well, it’s on. sarah is countering obama’s flippancy on the fears of most americans by using the bills’ own words and she has footnotes.

The provision that President Obama refers to is Section 1233 of HR 3200, entitled “Advance Care Planning Consultation.” [2] With all due respect, it’s misleading for the President to describe this section as an entirely voluntary provision that simply increases the information offered to Medicare recipients. The issue is the context in which that information is provided and the coercive effect these consultations will have in that context.

Section 1233 authorizes advanced care planning consultations for senior citizens on Medicare every five years, and more often “if there is a significant change in the health condition of the individual … or upon admission to a skilled nursing facility, a long-term care facility… or a hospice program.” [3] During those consultations, practitioners must explain “the continuum of end-of-life services and supports available, including palliative care and hospice,” and the government benefits available to pay for such services. [4]

sarah then goes on to break all of this down contextually which is something the lefty promoters of this boondoggle won’t, can’t, or are scared to do.

it’s all interesting don’t you think? it’s not michael steele or newt or romney or huckabee or mccain poking The iOne in the nose. it’s sarah palin, from far away in alaska and posting on facebook, who is taking control of the healthcare debate. it’s really her message: individual liberty versus government control.

in my opinion, the girl is tucked away and she is studying. she’s also running.

Dang that Sarah Palin!!! How dare she use the actual bill and Obamas own words in her argument!!! Obamas already been caught in several lies about his health care reform. What’s one more?

Alright, so let’s get to it. Completely ignorant and totally irrelevant personal attack on Sarah Palin in 5…4…3…2…1…

I think she’s running too. Also, the others you mentioned: Huckabee, Steele, etc have made comments against Obamacare but they have been shots that really didn’t resonate. Any thing Palin says sticks and this is personal to her because of Trig.

I like Sarah Palin too but I think she needs to really bone up on subjects especially foreign policy. I also think she needs to travel outside the country more then just Iraq and Afghanistan… go to Israel. go to Europe, Asia.

She is smart has has the “it” factor, is competent, but she needs to be DEEP too.

Palin posts on Facebook!! Hellooooo? No press releases, no public speaking engagements. Just her and her moose and Facebook. That should convince you of her complete dolt-ness if you still didn’t know.

  5. Jane said:

On CNN James Carville basically said the public option is all but dead and that Obama would sign a healthcare reform bill without one and be happy about it. So much for all the ridiculous manufactured town halls and the GOP gloating currently going on.

  6. micky said:

    Brilliant Paul.
Whatever you think of her being on facebook doesnt take away from the fact that she broke down the provisions into a context that explains it all. Which, as Kate mentions, is way more than you or any of your leaders have been able to do so far.

Agreed Marsha, shes a diamond in the rough.

Its become common knowledge already that these are not manuactured events.
Obama wont sign squat unless theres something in it for him and pay back to his cohorts

Ridiculous. You guys sit in here and fight all day and never learn a thing.

We suffered through 8 years of the craziness of the Bush Administration. He sunk this country into the deepest depression and bankrupt the nation. You all sat by and did not say a word. Now that we have a President that truly is trying to help us, you get vocal and want to scream bloody murder.

Your time to scream was when Bush was in office. The damaged that Bush left will take the next 3 Presidents to try and repair and you all know it.

The sad thing about it is that when it is all over and we have a new health care program in place all you cry babies will benefit from the program as well. There is one thing for sure when it come to our health, things can turn on a dime. You may not need it today, but who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Go ahead Sarah Palin and run for office. Please! Please! Please!

Sarah Palin is an irresponsible hypocrite and could never be a successful president. She preaches her conservative ideas to the whole country but could not stop her under-age child from becoming pregnant.

    Thanks Paul, you didn’t disappoint!!

“You guys sit in here and fight all day and never learn a thing.”

Well Pundit, let’s see who has and hasn’t learned a thing, let’s look at the rest of your post:

“He sunk this country into the deepest depression and bankrupt the nation. You all sat by and did not say a word.”

Wrong. The economic crisis was triggered by the collapse in the housing market. A collapse the Republicans saw coming and tried to stop, but the dems refused to listen and were too busy patting themselves on the back for getting home loans for those who couldn’t afford it. You see the result. Your precious Obama was part of that group Pundit and had just as much a hand in the current crisis as anyone. Turn off Olbermann and try researching these things, they are not hard to find.

“Now that we have a President that truly is trying to help us, you get vocal and want to scream bloody murder.”

Wrong. Obama is trying to help himself and his lackeys. The stimulus was a joke and anyone who saw where the money was going knew it wasn’t going to help the economy. It was a liberal wish list, nothing more.

“Your time to scream was when Bush was in office.”

Wrong. Our time to scream is whenever we feel like it, it is not for YOU to decide when we should voice our opinion. I could just as easily ask you how hypocrites like yourself raged against the half billion dollar deficit that Bush rung up in 8 YEARS, only to say nothing when Obama tripled it in 6 months.

“The sad thing about it is that when it is all over and we have a new health care program in place all you cry babies will benefit from the program as well.”

No, Pundit, the sad thing about it is if this disastrous administration passes this health care bill and cripples the health care industry, the cowards on the left will still try and blame the Republicans. Apparently you haven’t been looking at the polls because the “will of the people” is that they don’t want this kind of reform.

“There is one thing for sure when it come to our health, things can turn on a dime. You may not need it today, but who knows what tomorrow will bring?”

Interesting, I was about to point out the same thing to you.

It’s so amusing watching Pennie floundering around trying to sound intelligent about a topic. This is the best she can do.

Of course, Pennie!! Because having a child who gets pregnant and being qualified to be president are EXACTLY the same thing!!!!! Gosh, you’re smart!!!!

    Sorry, you’re wrong.
Obama has taken what could of been fixed with minimal intervention and made it a hundred times worse.
You might want to take a look at Frank, Dodd, F&F, Clinton and Carters CRA, and the 111th congress before you go so predictably blaming Bush for what happened.

The rest of your fear mongering”never know when you’ll get sick” post is laughable on not even worth bothering with. In my sleep I could bring arguments against the differences between getting sick now with my plan and later with yours, yawn.

“The damaged that Bush left will take the next 3 Presidents to try and repair and you all know it. ”

Oh, okay, if you say so.

Now I wonder where Palin got that RIDICULOUS idea of death panels????

    http://blogs.dailymail.com/donsurber/2009/08/13/obama-death-panels-anyone/

Via Mickey Kaus, this exchange with David Leonhardt of the New York Times:

“OBAMA: “I mean, the chronically ill and those toward the end of their lives are accounting for potentially 80 percent of the total health care bill out here.”

LEONHARDT: “So how do you — how do we deal with it? ”

OBAMA: “Well, I think that there is going to have to be a conversation that is guided by doctors, scientists, ethicists. And then there is going to have to be a very difficult democratic conversation that takes place. It is very difficult to imagine the country making those decisions just through the normal political channels. And that’s part of why you have to have some independent group that can give you guidance. It’s not determinative, but I think has to be able to give you some guidance. And that’s part of what I suspect you’ll see emerging out of the various health care conversations that are taking place on the Hill right now.”

Just remember: The goal is to save money, not lives.”

Oh, THAT’S where she got the idea.

Oh, it gets better!!! Apparently the non-existent “death panel” clause has been dropped from the health care bill:

    http://sweetness-light.com/archive/never-existing-death-panel-gets-dropped

“The Senate Finance Committee will drop a controversial provision on consultations for end-of-life care from its proposed healthcare bill, its top Republican member said Thursday.

The committee, which has worked on putting together a bipartisan healthcare reform bill, will drop the controversial provision after it was derided by conservatives as “death panels” to encourage euthanasia.”

Wow, its a good thing it never existed, huh?

Pennie - did your mom (or dad) stand over your shoulder the first time you had sex? Better yet - I take it you’ve never made a mistake.

Besides - it looks like Palin was right:

The Senate Finance Committee will drop a controversial provision on consultations for end-of-life care from its proposed healthcare bill, its top Republican member said Thursday.

The committee, which has worked on putting together a bipartisan healthcare reform bill, will drop the controversial provision after being derided as “death panels” to encourage euthanasia by conservatives.

“On the Finance Committee, we are working very hard to avoid unintended consequences by methodically working through the complexities of all of these issues and policy options,” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said in a statement. “We dropped end-of-life provisions from consideration entirely because of the way they could be misinterpreted and implemented incorrectly.”

Yeah, Sarah Palin is such an idiot.

Hardly a ringing endorsement of Caribou Barbie!!!

  27. Cynthia said:

There is so much more in HR 3200 then the death panels that are BAD. How about starting with the CBO’s estimate of a 1 TRILLION dollar price tag???

  28. micky said:

    Gene.
Its still in the house version.
Which is why Obama came out at the AARP meeting and tried to clarify that its not required. Which is why its till an issue.
People are still concerned because its not worded such so that it couldnt be amended. As a matter of fact those that have read the bill say that it laid out and worded so as to be almost intentionally vague and non commiting therby later allowing amendments to made that much easier.
Many are complaining that the damn thing doesnt even make sense half the time.

    =====================================================
“But the sessions are not required, as President Obama reassured seniors last week at an AARP town hall meeting, when one woman said she’d been told that the policy requires everyone of Medicare age to be visited and told they have to decide how they wish to die.

“Nobody is going to be forcing you to make a set of decisions on end-of-life care based on, you know, some bureaucratic law in Washington,” the president said”
    =====================================================

The problem is that theres no set terminology or type of context the counselours can present this to you in. If the fed is being pressured to save money then counselors could simply be instructed to make non resucitation a more attractive option to you than being kept alive in pain.
I cant imagine any plan not offering these services or choices but when you have the government involved in helping make these end of life decisions its just too damn spooky, can you understand that ? Sure, the insurance companies may not be of that pure a motive either but the fact is that more people trust private insurance companies than they do the government.

    Lisab.
His mom and his granma are gone now so nobody else can have one either.

All politicians have people write their material for them, Obama probably more than anyone.

Exactly, Cynthia. The “death panels” were just the beginning. People still aren’t happy with this impending disaster.

“She seems nice enough but my 5 year old Border Collie is more intelligent.”

Ok Mandy. You’re one of the sea of Palin haters to come here so I’ll ask you the same thing I ask them. Tell me how and why Obama is so intelligent and qualified to be president?

Of course, I don’t expect a response. They never do.

Gene, I offered you civility after all the crap you’ve tossed at me and still you cant bring yourself outta the crap can you ?

  34. Rope said:

They dropped it after weeks of saying it wasn’t in the bill and weeks after calling others liars for saying it was. Sad really. And they wonder why there’s concern over the bill.
