americans win nobel prize in medicine
October 6, 2009
while our feckless president conducts the epitome of astroturfed photo ops complete with doctors in white lab coats, propping up a failing healthcare reform bill, did you know that 3 americans, drs. jack szostak, carol greider and elizabeth blackburn have won the nobel prize in medicine? their research was on discovering how chromosomes protect themselves as cells divide, work that has inspired experimental cancer therapies and may offer insights into aging. coolio!
i wonder if this award creates yet one more opportunity to discuss how our health care system might not be so terrible after all? by the way, their prize includes $1.4 million, split among the three winners.

I just read the NYT article linked here. 2 of the 3 doctors are American by choice. I am not sure that counts as a defense of our horrible healthcare system!

…and all this from a healthcare system that is in “dire need” of reform…
P.S. I acknowledge that R&D vs. health services are different kettles of fish, but still, this does go to show that the U.S. is FAR from “at the bottom” of the barrel or “lagging behind”.

Scarlett,
“American by choice”?! I think that is EXACTLY a “defense”. They’ve voluntarily JOINED up!! How much more of an endorsement do you need that the U.S. is where people want to be when it comes to health, healthcare, R&D, etc.?

It doesn’t matter what anyone says, David, the neo-sociailsts will not be happy until our health care system is in shambles. That’s what they are fighting for and no amount of truth or facts are going to change their mind.
Truly sad.
